Value captureCapturing the value of new science breakthroughsThe Dairy Futures CRC is taking a novel approach to supporting the uptake of new innovations through a dedicated program of work that is called the Value Capture program. The Program vision is for: Effective alignment between genetic innovations and the Australian dairy industry to ensure utilisation partners, dairy farmers and dairy processors capture the full benefits from CRC technologies. This approach will see the CRC improve the positioning of new advances in bioscience so they best fit the needs of modern dairy farming businesses. This includes the use of computer modelling, on-farm demonstration sites and market and social research, to identify and capture the value wherever it appears along the dairy supply chain. A second part of the Value Capture program is to consider new investments in three major themes:
A range of current research projects have the potential to reduce the environmental footprint, particularly the efficient use of water, nutrients and a reduction in methane production. A recent scoping study that examined the potential to improve the health properties of milk recommended that the primary target should be the production of high quality milk that meets current industry specifications. The major emphasis was on quality parameters such as somatic cell count and maintaining current levels of protein and fat. There is significant untapped potential to identify cows that produce milk that is more suitable for the manufacture of major dairy products such as cheese. New approaches that utilise genomic (DNA) technology are now being developed. |
